First machine for an adult beginner, mechanical or computerized

I'm buying my very first sewing machine as an adult beginner and completely stuck between a basic mechanical model and a slightly pricier computerized one with more stitch options. Part of me thinks a mechanical machine will teach me the fundamentals better, and part of me worries I'll outgrow it within a year and end up buying twice. Budget is around three hundred dollars. What would you tell your past self if you were starting completely from scratch again?
