I've been reading up on the history of bound buttonholes since I finally attempted my first set, and it's interesting how common this technique was on even mid-range ready-to-wear garments through the mid-twentieth century before it largely disappeared from mass production in favor of cheaper machine buttonholes. Would love to hear from anyone who's studied garment history more deeply about when exactly this shift happened and what drove it beyond simple cost cutting.
