French seams on a curved hem, is it even possible

I love the clean finish of a French seam but I'm struggling to apply the technique to a curved hem rather than a straight seam, since the enclosed seam allowance seems to fight the curve and create small puckers along the edge. Is this technique genuinely not suited to curves, or is there a trick to clipping or trimming that makes it work? Would rather find a solution than default to a plain zigzag finish on this particular hem.
