Comparing sizing between Big 4 patterns and indie companies

I've always cut a size 14 in Big 4 patterns like Vogue and Butterick but every indie brand review I read says to size up or down depending on the company. Is there a general rule of thumb, or does it really vary that wildly company to company? I'm about to buy patterns from three different indie brands and don't want to waste fabric on a wrong-size muslin for each one. A cheat sheet or a general trend would save me a lot of guessing.
