Is it worth repairing a 1972 Singer or just buying new

I inherited a 1972 Singer that needs a new motor belt and possibly some timing work, and the local repair quote came in at almost as much as a new entry-level Brother. Sentimentally I want to fix it, but practically I'm not sure it makes sense. It's an all-metal machine and sews like a tank when it works. Has anyone done a repair like this themselves to save money, or is it genuinely a job for a professional given the timing component?
