Twenty years of quilting, first garment attempt starts tomorrow

I've been piecing quilts since my twenties and thought garment sewing couldn't be that different, but apparently curves and darts are a whole different beast than half-square triangles. I'm cutting into a Grainline Farrow dress tomorrow in a cotton lawn I've been saving. My quarter-inch seam allowance instincts are apparently useless here since most patterns want five-eighths. Wish me luck and please tell me fitting gets less confusing with practice, because right now the tissue paper alone has me stressed.
