Brother machine throwing thread every few inches on canvas

Trying to sew a tote bag out of heavyweight canvas on my basic Brother and the thread keeps snapping every three or four inches, both top and bobbin thread at different times. I dropped down to a size 90 denim needle and increased stitch length but it's still happening. The machine handles quilting cotton just fine so I don't think it's fundamentally broken. Wondering if this fabric is simply too heavy for this machine or if there's a tension trick for thick layers.
