Coverstitch hems keep skipping on ribbing, what am I doing wrong

My coverstitch machine handles regular jersey hems beautifully but the moment I try to hem anything with rib knit, I get consistent skipped stitches every couple of inches. I've tried a ballpoint needle and slowed my sewing speed down, both of which are the usual advice, but the problem persists specifically with ribbing and nothing else. Is rib knit just a harder fabric for coverstitch machines in general, or is there a setting I'm missing here?
