Vintage machines and modern needles, is there a compatibility issue

I recently started sewing regularly on a vintage straight-stitch machine from the fifties and I'm not sure whether modern needles are actually compatible or if I should be sourcing a specific vintage-style needle instead. The machine takes standard needles as far as I can tell from the manual, but I've read conflicting things online about shank length differences across eras. Would appreciate hearing from anyone regularly sewing on an older machine about what actually works reliably.
