Twin needle hemming on jersey without the dreaded tunneling

Every time I hem jersey with a twin needle I end up with that tunneling effect between the two rows of stitching, where the fabric puckers up in a ridge no amount of pressing seems to fully flatten. I'm using a stretch twin needle and stabilizing with a strip of tricot interfacing on the hem allowance, which I thought would prevent exactly this. Any tricks for actually eliminating tunneling rather than just minimizing it after the fact?
