Best stitch settings for sewing swimwear fabric on a regular machine

I don't own a coverstitch machine yet and I'm attempting a swimsuit using just my regular sewing machine's stretch stitches. The fabric has significant four-way stretch and I want the seams to actually survive being pulled repeatedly without popping. Is a narrow zigzag the best default, or should I be using the machine's dedicated stretch stitch setting even though it sews slower and looks a bit unusual compared to a normal straight stitch line?
