Upgrading from a basic Brother, is a Bernina worth the price jump

I've had a basic Brother machine for two years and I'm considering upgrading to a Bernina, but the price difference is significant enough that I want to be sure it's actually worth it rather than just nicer branding. I mostly sew garments in woven and knit fabrics, nothing especially technical yet. For people who've made a similar jump, did the higher price translate into a noticeably better sewing experience, or was it more about longevity and resale value?
