How much should I preshrink wool suiting before cutting

I bought four yards of a lovely wool suiting for a blazer and I'm nervous about ruining it in the preshrink process. Steam pressing feels safer than machine washing but I don't want to under-shrink and then have the finished jacket shrink unevenly after its first dry clean. Do you steam the whole length with a press cloth, or send it to be professionally steamed before cutting? Curious what's actually necessary here versus overly cautious for a wool that isn't superfine.
