Bound buttonholes terrify me, is there a foolproof method

I've avoided bound buttonholes for years, always subbing in machine buttonholes instead even when a pattern really calls for the tailored look. I'm finally attempting a proper wool coat and want to do this right instead of chickening out again. Every tutorial I find seems to assume a comfort level I don't have yet. Is there a method that's genuinely more forgiving for a first attempt, maybe one using strips instead of the traditional welt technique? Practice scraps welcome as encouragement.
