Scorch marks
A brown or yellow mark burned into fabric comes from an iron too hot for the fiber, or leaving it in one spot too long. Test heat on a scrap first and keep the iron moving.

Shortening a garment
Reducing a garment's length, most often at the hem or sleeve, involves trying it on to mark the new length, trimming the excess, and refinishing the raw edge to match the original hem style.
beginner · Alterations
Shrinkage after washing
A garment coming out smaller after its first wash usually means the fabric wasn't pre-washed before cutting, or was laundered hotter than the fiber tolerates. Always pre-wash fabric the way the finished garment will be laundered.

Sizing mistakes
A garment that doesn't fit despite following the pattern comes from choosing a size by ready-to-wear labels rather than the pattern's own body measurements. Measure yourself and compare directly to the finished measurement chart.

Skipped stitches
Stitches that fail to form, leaving gaps, usually come from a bent, dull, or wrong-type needle, or bad threading. Replace the needle, match it to the fabric, and rethread top and bobbin.
beginner · Machine problems
Snapped bobbin thread
The bobbin thread breaking mid-seam, leaving only top stitches, often means the bobbin was wound unevenly, inserted backward, or lint has jammed the case. Rewind the bobbin evenly, reinsert correctly, and clean the case.

Stains and fabric rescue
Treating a stain successfully depends on identifying whether it's oil, protein, tannin, or dye based and acting before it sets or gets heat-treated by drying. Blot rather than rub, and test any remover on a hidden area first.

Static cling while sewing
Fabric clinging to itself or the machine bed, distorting seams, is caused by low humidity and synthetic fibers building static charge. A light water mist, anti-static spray, or humidifier reduces the effect.

Stretched necklines
A neckline that gapes and has lost its shape usually comes from cutting on the bias without stabilizing, or handling the edge too much before finishing. Stay-stitch the neckline immediately after cutting.
