Bias distortion
Edges or seams that stretch and lose their shape happen when fabric cut near the bias grain is handled without support. Stay-stitch bias edges promptly after cutting and avoid pulling the fabric while sewing.
Fabric stretching while sewing
A seam that ends up longer than the fabric it was cut from, common on knits and bias cuts, comes from the foot or hands pulling fabric taut while sewing. Support the fabric's weight instead of pulling it.

Satin or silk sliding apart mid-seam despite pinning is caused by low surface friction between layers. Use fine silk pins or clips, hand-baste critical seams, and sew slowly with a walking foot.
Static cling while sewing
Fabric clinging to itself or the machine bed, distorting seams, is caused by low humidity and synthetic fibers building static charge. A light water mist, anti-static spray, or humidifier reduces the effect.
