Napped fabric shading

Edges or seams that stretch and lose their shape happen when fabric cut near the bias grain is handled without support. Stay-stitch bias edges promptly after cutting and avoid pulling the fabric while sewing.

Pattern pieces cut with pile running in different directions on fabrics like velvet or corduroy look a different shade once assembled. Always cut all pieces with a with-nap layout, following the pattern's nap arrow.

Layers shifting out of alignment as they're stitched, common with silky fabrics, comes from insufficient friction between layers and the feed dogs. Pin generously, hand-baste, or use tissue paper and a walking foot.

A seam that ends up longer than the fabric it was cut from, common on knits and bias cuts, comes from the foot or hands pulling fabric taut while sewing. Support the fabric's weight instead of pulling it.

Cut edges unraveling before a seam is even sewn is common on loosely woven fabrics like linen. Finish edges early with pinking shears, a zigzag stitch, or fray-check liquid.
