Could AI identify a fabric just from a photo?

Researchers are working on AI that can recognize different fabric structures from images — including textures such as jersey, twill and satin. The idea is to make it easier to identify and organize huge numbers of textile samples without having to examine every fabric manually. But there’s a catch: AI can still struggle with fabrics it hasn’t seen before or images from different sources. Still, imagine taking a photo of a fabric and instantly getting its weave or structure.
